Love, Bikram Yoga White Rock

My Dear Students and Friends,

This yoga studio started as a dream of mine over five years ago, and it is now an incredible space filled with amazing people. My dream has been fulfilled, and I am sad to say that this will be my final address to you as the owner of Bikram Yoga White Rock. I am retiring as director of this studio, and Jai and Sandy Braithwaite will be taking it from here.

Last year on my 30th birthday I asked myself what I really wanted to be doing by the time I was 40, and the first word that appeared on the blank page in front of me was ‘writing’ (the second was ‘yoga’). I’ve decided to listen to my heart and pursue my creative gifts in hopes of realizing another crazy dream: To be a published and successful author.

I have known many of you for a long time now, and your transformations, struggles and funny yoga faces have inspired me tremendously. I’ll be diving into these inspirations through writing and video on my new blog, ‘Peace and Hotness’ and in my first book ‘Superhuman Yoga Power’ (with pictures!), which is essentially about realizing our superhuman potential. I get excited just thinking about it.

I hope you all bear in mind as you go through your challenges in class that yoga is ultimately about Self-Realization. By practicing your asanas, you are creating a harmony between your body and your mind. It’s this harmony that will lead you to the realization of your true happiness, and that is what I wish for each and every one of you.

Thank you for all the amazing memories and lessons. I will see you in class.

With love,

Jenny.

Triangle Pose

Triangle PoseThe triangle is the only posture in the world that improves every muscle, joint, tendon, and internal organ in the body. At the same time, it revitalizes nerves, veins, and tissues. It helps cure lumbago and rheumatism of the lower spine by flexing and strengthening the last five vertebrae, and it improves crooked spines. This is the most important pose to increase the strength and flexibility of the hip joint and of the muscles of the side of the torso. It also firms upper thighs and hips, slims the waistline, and improves the deltoid, trapezius, scapula, and latissimus muscles.

“Be Kind to Yourself”… My New Year’s Resolution by Erin Ridsdale

I know, I know, the predictable New Year’s Resolution; but I am going to do it anyway. Over the past few months I have had numerous conversations with moms and dads talking about those questions that we often do… did I handle that situation right when I caught my son in a fib? Did I say the correct thing when my daughter came home from school crying because she had a fight with her best friend? Am I feeding my kids the right foods? Why does my kid talk back to me? These are great questions and we should be evaluating how we are doing as moms and dads, but I found that sometimes these discussions border on us tormenting ourselves.

One of the first Bikram Yoga classes that I attended was with the beautiful Natalie Coulter and she said something that impacted me, and I think of it often, “Be kind to yourself.” Of course this applies in the hot room, be kind to yourself as each class is different and you may not be able to balance today like you could the last class. Be kind to yourself.

I have taken this mantra and applied it to all areas of my life, especially being a momma. I have decided to that I am going to trust. Trust that when I hold my son lovingly and talk to him about the importance of truth even when it is hard to say he will learn that lesson. Trust that when my daughter is broken hearted and we talk about how people can hurt us even when they are best friends; that she will not be afraid to love. I am going to trust that when I come from a place of love and wanting what is best for my kids; that somehow, some way they will be okay and I said and did the right thing.

So here it is, my New Year’s Resolution. I am going to be kind to myself. I am going to stop being so hard on myself in life and in my practice. Ahhh, I feel better already.
